Mistake Number 2

Ruse was already in the pool when I closed the door behind me. I glanced around as she watched, and as my eyes flicked toward her door she said, "It's just us tonight."

Returning my attention to her, I saw her blushing faintly as she kept her eyes firmly on mine ... which, of course, told me she'd already noticed my problem.

I couldn't see her swimsuit since the pool apparently had bubble jets and she was up to her neck in the water. The jets were cranked up to max, so I just made my way slowly to the rim and sat down, folding my legs in and working the straps loose.

She didn't say anything as I set my prosthetics aside one at a time, and I gave her a long few seconds to look before I shifted up to my hands and eased into the water. It was cool, but not cold, and I sank in with a sigh as I said, "Yeah ... this is nice."

She smiled and said, "Now you know why I wanted to enjoy it. Who knows how long we'll actually get to stay here. I wasn't about to lose my opportunity."

I nodded and said, "It's about time you caught a break."

Her smile turned rueful as she shifted on the bench, drawing closer to me. She stopped when her shoulder was just a few inches from mine. She was about my height, and I noted absently that her hair was done up in a bun to keep it dry. It exposed her neck, which was slender and smoothly tapered down into her shoulder. I got a little lost following those lines, but she drew my attention back to her expression as she said, "Meeting you was the first break I caught since I got out of Florida, but we really need to talk."

Nodding, I pulled my arms out of the water and leaned back as I said, "Yeah, I suppose we're due. Do you want to start, or should I?"

She blinked at me, then said, "Why don't you start?"

"I spoke to Kahni."

"Oh, that. Yeah, she told me. I don't know what you said, but whatever it was, you shook her up pretty bad."

"Good."

Ruse was silent for a moment, then said, "I do like you, you know? I don't want you to think I'm ungrateful for everything you've given me. Everything you've done for me. No one ever looked out for me like you do, and I see that."

Sighing, I nodded and said, "But ...?"

She laughed softly and shook her head as she said, "There's stuff about you that worries me. I mean like, serious problems."

"Ruse, whatever else you may think of me, I'm not going to press," I said. "If friends is what you want, I'm totally fine with that. Ordinarily I wouldn't say this, but since Kahni's been pushing you so hard I feel I have to. I'm not going to push you, and I'm not going to get involved with Kahni."

She looked into my eyes, searching them.
